Position Overview
Reporting to the Manager, Customs Compliance, The Customs Compliance Specialist ensures the accurate preparation, collection, and organization of all customs documentation for import and export activities. This role is critical in maintaining adherence to U.S. and Canadian customs regulations, international trade laws, and internal compliance standards. You will support transborder shipping, streamline customs processes, enhance operational controls, and maintain high compliance accuracy across all customs functions.

Position Overview
Reporting to the Manager, Customs Compliance, The Customs Compliance Specialist ensures the accurate preparation, collection, and organization of all customs documentation for import and export activities. This role is critical in maintaining adherence to U.S. and Canadian customs regulations, international trade laws, and internal compliance standards. You will support transborder shipping, streamline customs processes, enhance operational controls, and maintain high compliance accuracy across all customs functions.
Key Responsibilities
Customs Operations & Documentation
- Prepare, review, and organize all customs documentation in compliance with international and domestic regulations.
- Coordinate with customs brokers to expedite clearance and prevent delays, penalties, or additional fees.
- Maintain high documentation integrity, including CTPAT records, version control, and audit readiness.
Supply Chain Coordination
- Collaborate with 3PLs and FTZ operators to ensure accurate reporting and customs adherence.
- Provide after-hours troubleshooting support as operational needs require.
- Complete additional duties assigned by management.
Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Partner with internal teams (Transportation, Engineering, Shipping, Customer Service, Marketing, Finance) for timely, accurate shipment communication.
- Work closely with external partners: carriers, freight forwarders, trucking companies, and international clients.
Compliance, Governance & Process Improvement
- Develop and maintain SOPs and process maps for customs-related workflows.
- Conduct ongoing evaluation of customs processes to improve accuracy, reduce risk, and enhance efficiency.
- Identify noncompliance issues, report risks, define corrective actions, and participate in audits.
- Stay current on regulatory changes (tariff classifications, trade agreements, FTZ rules) and communicate impacts to stakeholders.
Ideal Qualifications
Required
- 3+ years of customs, import/export, or trade compliance experience
- Strong knowledge of U.S. & Canadian customs regulations
- Required: CCS designation (Certified Customs Specialist)
- Familiarity with FTZ operations (asset)
- Strong understanding of international trade, ocean freight, and highway cargo regulations
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- High accuracy, urgency, and attention to detail
- Process improvement and analytical problem‑solving skills
- MS Office proficiency (Excel, PowerPoint, Word); Power BI is an asset
- Diploma in Supply Chain or Logistics (asset)
Physical Demands and Working Conditions
- Primarily office‑based role with standard business hours; occasional extended hours may be required to meet deadlines or support time‑sensitive operational needs.
- Hybrid work model: 4 days onsite as per company hybrid policy.
- After‑hours availability: Candidates should be comfortable providing on‑call support for urgent customs or operational matters as needed.
